Good Nutrition plays such an important part in the
overall health and well being of your Rottie. Although we are also firm believers in great genetics and proper exercise, we
cannot stress enough that nutrition also plays a very crucial part towards the longevity of your Rottie.
We are often asked, "what do we feed our baby?" We will
attempt to dedicate this page to answering that ? as well as to explain why.
Of the many people that we visit with throughout the US,
the one common problem we are hearing is how this one or that one have lost their Rottie anywhere from 5yrs and up to either
Cancer, liver/kidney problems, autoimmune disease, or unexplained diagnoses resulting in the death of their beloved pet.
It is simply heartbreaking to listen to their stories.
Over the years with all the research we have done regarding petfoods(we are experienced breeders, not scientists or nutritionists!),
and all the people we have visited with, we have come to believe that harmful preservatives and poor dogfood choices
have more than likely played a huge part in the early deaths and sicknesses found in many Rotties.
We have always fed a meat based dogfood(only "DRY"), no
harmful preservatives or cereals, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, fish, egg, glucosamine, and other good vitamins/nutrients. We
also feed our Rotties a good ol beef knuckle bone for treats, chewing, and good ol relaxation. No bisquits with the preservatives
BHA or BHT. We feel those are harmful. Our Rotties have lived to ripe old ages, those we have retired are in excellent shape
and health. And all this we attibute a great part to good nutrition. We also do not over vaccinate, provide proper exercise(do
not overdue it on young ones by letting them run too much, keep them from climbing too many stairs!), and obviously our great
genetics play a huge part in the longevity of our Rotties.
So now having said all that, we will name several dogfoods(we
use only dry) currently on the market that do not start out with cereal but meat, fish, egg product, natural preservatives,
glucosamine for joint health, vitamins/minerals, and the omegas 3 and 6 for lustrous coat and healthy skin, plus other
healthy ingredients.
SPECIAL NOTE: We only feed dry dogfood: Please check the AKC site or
menu foods for recalled canned dogfoods.
Canidae, Innova(made by Natura), Royal Canin, Purina
Pro Plan Selects, PMI Exclusive, and Chicken Soup, to name a few. Also, "THE WHOLE DOG JOURNAL" is a monthly guide
to natural dog care/training and publishes a list of excellent dogfood products. Check them out!
Always remember that dogs are carniverous and should be
fed a meat based dogfood starting out with either chicken/beef/turkey or lamb which is for sensitive stomachs. Only natural
preservatives, fish meal, vitamins, and the important omegas 3 and 6 fatty acids. Also feed natural treats, bisquits, or beef
knuckle bones(the marrow is good for them!). Remember to keep your Rottie on a regular worming program as this is
very important too. If your Rottie has a dull coat, dandruff, excessive hair loss, more than likely he/she is on a poor
diet and has not been wormed properly. As they age, one can also have their vet check for any Thyroid problems. Be very careful not
to overfeed your Rottie as this will shorten their life too. Do not over exercise such as running too much or climbing
stairs, as this is harmful to joints in the early growing stages from puppy up to at least 1yr of age or better. Your
Rottie does not mature fully until 2yrs of age.
It really DOES make a difference what you feed your Rottie.
Ours are extremely healthy and have had a long life span. We have no doubt in our mind it is what they are fed, regular wormings,
and proper exercise.
Please contact us anytime and we will do our best to help
with anymore questions or concerns regarding the health of your beloved Rottie.
We would also like to say our hearts go out to all that
have loved and lost their precious Rottie for whatever reason. To this day, we are still getting emails/calls regarding the
death of someones beloved Rottie at too early of an age. We hope this page will be helpful and shed some light.
May God bless.
